Given the recent surge in violence and protest nationwide, we recognise that it may be affecting your overall well-being and sense of safety. It is natural to feel scared and distressed during such incidents.
Safety first remains committed to prioritising anti-racism and wants to ensure you that any form of racism will not be accepted.
As a Safety Project our aim is to try and help disabled people feel safe in a range of situations, so whilst we don’t want to further fuel the mass panic that is currently around we do want to let disabled people know that DENW in particular the safety first team are here for any concerns to pass on and for reassurance.
During this period, our goal is to make sure that you have all the necessary support and guidance you may require

Q: How are we @DENW responding to the threat of far right protests following the horrific events in Southport, as a regional disabled people’s organisation in North West England?
A: Here’s a few key areas of our current focus:
– We sit on strategic advisory groups with the police, local authority etc, and as such have been attending regular briefings and meetings to get updates to share with our community and staff.
– We continue to gather community intelligence to pass on to the police, often ‘out of hours’.
– Our staff, in particular the Safety First Team, and LILS staff (who visit people at home across Lancashire) are spending time reassuring anxious clients.
– Where needed we adapt our service provision to keep our community and staff safe (as we have good policies and procedures anyway we haven’t had to make any major changes).
– Friendship Friday sessions continue to go ahead as planned with useful information and community reassurance messages being shared.
– All our projects, services and contracted work remains on target despite the additional work being placed on our staff.
– We are available on all the usual contact details by email and phone, but please bear with us if we don’t respond immediately as we are attending many additional meetings.
