Disability Equality NW CEO Mel Close has been recognised with the Proud Preston Award, celebrating her commitment to supporting communities and creating opportunities for people across the city.
For Mel, the recognition is not just about her own work, but about the many people who have supported and influenced her journey along the way.
Speaking after receiving the award, she said:
“I wasn’t born a leader, I was made one by all the wonderful people in my life that helped me along the way – family, friends, work colleagues and so many others. Whether we’ve known each other for a lifetime or just met for two minutes, thank you. You’ve helped me get here tonight.”
With her usual humour, Mel also joked during her speech that the moment might also serve as a reminder to a few people who once doubted what she could achieve.
Mel said she feels incredibly fortunate to be able to play an active role in the life of the city.
“I’m very blessed to have three wonderful roles in the city of Preston, and being able to support people and communities here means a huge amount to me.”
She also took time to recognise the other finalists at the awards, highlighting the strength of community work taking place across the city.
“I was in the company of some amazing finalists across all the categories and it was an absolute pleasure to spend the evening with them and hear more about their work. I’m a proper Proud Prestonian.”
